Bad cops

Bokkenrijders (buckriders or goatriders) started as a true story. They were a devilish gang of of violent criminals that pillaged and plundered the Dutch province of Limburg in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. These people were said to have made a pact with the devil and sworn on “the dead hand.” They would appear out of nothing, flying on their bucks, commit a crime and then disappear into thin air.

Recent historical research shows the gang of the Goat Riders was a myth deliberately made up by local law enforcers as a pretext for torturing suspects while investigating thefts. The lie quickly led to hundreds of innocent people receiving the death penalty for only a few petty crimes.
